On This Day In Baltimore Orioles’ History: 5/20/1983 #35thAnniversary

Dan Ford II

The Baltimore Orioles’ brief, 4-game winning streak came to an end on this day in 1983 as they fell to the Toronto Blue Jays 7-5.

Dennis Martinez lasted just 3.1 innings and gave up 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 2 walks in losing his 7th game of the season.  Jim Gott was credited with his first win of the year for his 5 innings of 4-hit, 1-run work for the Blue Jays.

The Orioles did manage to hit three homeruns in the game, one each by Ken Singleton, Dan Ford and Jim Dwyer.  Dwyer’s blast was a 9th inning pinch hit solo homerun and Ford’s homerun was significant as it was his fifth in a 15 day span (he hit his first on May 6th against the Oakland Athletics in Oakland).

Ford is certainly on a tear.  In the last 13 games he has played in (5/6-5/20) he is slashing .339/ .393/ .714/ 1.108 with 15 runs, 19 hits, 6 doubles, 5 homeruns, 13 RBI and 5 walks.  The Orioles’ record in those 13 games is 9-4 (Ford did not play in the second game of the double-header on May 17th).
